Max has been active in the US-based Project Management Institute ("PMI") for many years and was elected to the PMI Board as Vice President Member Services (1984), then as President (1987) and Chairman of the Board (1988). In the mid-1980's, he led a team of some eighty PMI volunteers from across North America to document the very first Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) for the Institute. The PMBOK, in turn, is the basis for PMI's Project Management Professional certification program. Max has been recognized by PMI with Distinguished Contribution and Person of the Year (1985, 1986) honors.
